Chris Benedict, Boys , Wayne Kreiger, Girls Columbia City       Our Whitley County Foundation helped sponsor our events with “Pink Games” and matched our efforts dollar for dollar.  The total for our boys and girls team raised is $17,230

The staff, students and families of Columbia City High School once again showed their true colors – maroon and gold always, but this time with a warm coating of pink!  Players for the CCHS Boys and Girls Basketball teams were inspired to hold pink jersey games to benefit the new Whitley County Cancer Care Fund in late January.  With a dollar for dollar match offered by the Community Foundation, Shots Against Cancer raised a phenomenal $17,230 for the new endowment fund that will help support local non-profit organizations providing services to Whitley County residents who are battling cancer.

Thank you to Geoff Penrod and Coaches Chris Benedict and Wayne Kreiger for allowing their players to run with a great idea. This success of this event was made possible by generous parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who came together to bid on the pink jerseys for their favorite players.  We owe a debt of gratitude to Trish Hinen and Sheri Woll who, with Booster Club volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and enthusiastically made sure the project unfolded. Local residents remembered loved ones by supporting the event banner.  The CCHS Band literally put the frosting on the cake by selling delectable pink baked goods during both games; thank you Carol Wyatt! To the cheerleaders and student section who flooded the gym in pink, thanks for creating a sense of excitement and purpose. Our appreciation also extends to our friends at Wal-Mart who generously offered the Blue-Ray disk player as part of our auction, and to the following businesses that provided certificates for our Pick A Purse project:  Bravo Baskets, Carousel Hair Fashion, Dairy Queen, Dos by Dawn,  Morsches Lumber Company, Paige’s Crossing, Pizza Hut, Pizza King, and the Whitley Co. YMCA.

A big “thumbs up” to Chad Moore for his photography and graphic skills and to Bob Burman and staff for set-up assistance.

While “Eagle Pride” is often taken for granted, it undeniably flourished during Shots Against Cancer. How fitting that both teams won their games; a reflection of a bigger win for our entire community.

Sincerely, September McConnell
